MASE inks O&M Contract for Ministry of Education’s two utility-scale solar PV plants

Amman, Jordan – October 2019: MASE has signed a contract with Jordan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) to operate, maintain and manage the Ministry’s two utility-scale solar PV plants located in Ma’an and Mafraq, each with an installed capacity of 1,000 kW (1 MW).  The plants were developed by the Royal Hashemite Court (RHC) on behalf of the MOE in 2016 and their output is utilized to offset the electricity consumption for a number of schools and MOE offices across Jordan.

The contract was awarded to MASE on the basis of a competitive public tendering process managed by the MOE. As part of the tender evaluation, MASE received the highest technical marks and submitted the most competitive commercial proposal.

MASE’s Commercial O&M Team has been entrusted with managing the plants and will carry out a turnkey scope comprising performance engineering, preventive, corrective and conditional maintenance, in addition to emergency response and corrective maintenance.

MASE Team Member Research Paper Published in Science Direct

Science Direct publishes research article co-authored by MASE’s Aya Al-Hmoud

The Internet – July 2019: Science Direct, a leading publisher of scientific and research content, has published a research paper titled ‘Comparative CFD analysis of thermal energy storage materials in photovoltaic/thermal panels’.  The article was co-authored by MASE’s Aya Al-Hmoud (Design & Analysis Engineer) who conducted research and developed findings during her time completing her Master’s of Science degree in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering from University of Surrey in 2018.

At MASE, Aya is responsible for designing commercial and industrial solar PV systems and analyzing the performance of operational solar PV assets as part of the Company’s operations and maintenance value proposition.

The research article is organized into four main sections.  The authors use a transient Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation to compare the performance of desert sand to that of well-established phase-change materials used in photovoltaic/thermal systems. The simulation gives as a result the temperature profiles within the device as well as the time evolution of the charge/discharge cycles when using PCMs. The results show the suitability of desert sand as a thermal storage material to be used in photovoltaic/thermal systems.

MASE to Speak at RES4MED B2G Conference

MASE will speak at the Business-to-Government High Level Workshop organized by RES4MED&Africa

Amman, Jordan – March 2019: MASE will be speaking at the high-level business-to-government workshop organized by Renewable Energy Solutions for the Mediterranean and Africa (RES4MED&Africa), a regional platform for public-private sector dialogue with a core focus on addressing renewable energy issues across the Middle East and Africa regions.

MASE will be represented by its Managing Director Tareq Khalifeh, who will address a panel of private and public sector speakers.  The focus of the discussions will be on long-term energy strategies as mechanisms to exploiting new business models for an effective integration of renewable energy systems.

The workshop, which will see the participation of Jordan’s Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources and Minister of Water and Irrigation, is expected to avail a platform of open dialogue between key private sector players and high-level public sector decision makers.

MASE’s Tareq Khalifeh to speak at Harvard Business School Asia Business Conference 2019

Boston, Massachusetts – February 2019: MASE’s Tareq Khalifeh will be among a group of established energy entrepreneurs and professionals at the Harvard Business School Asia Business Conference 2019.  The Conference will be held at the Harvard Business School campus on Sunday March 3, 2019.

Khalifeh will join the Energy Panel to explore the current situation of energy markets across the region. The Panel will also discuss the efforts of individual countries and regional efforts and address the actions needed to adequately prepare the region for future challenges. As the only Arab panel member, Khalifeh will focus on presenting energy models in the Middle East and Gulf, challenges facing power and energy markets and innovative measures being implemented to address contemporary energy market challenges across the region.

MASE participates in workshop addressing technical skills development for solar O&M and asset management, organised by the Jordanian-German Center of Excellence for Solar Technicians in Mafraq 

Amman, Jordan – January 2019: Ady Almadanat, MASE’s Lead Engineer / Utility O&M, has participated on behalf of MASE in a workshop organised by the Jordanian-German Center of Excellence for Solar Technicians in Mafraq addressing technical skills development for solar O&M and asset management.  The workshop was attended by key members of the Center and candidate technicians from the city of Mafraq and was held at the Jordanian Construction Contractors Association (JCCA).

MASE’s presentation examined the typical project life cycle of utility-scale solar PV plants, job creation and functions across the various project functions. The presentation also focused on identifying the key skill-sets required for solar O&M and asset management technicians.

The Center was established in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), with the financial support of King Hussein Bin Talal Development Area and Orange Jordan and is aimed at building the capacity and availability of solar technicians in the city of Mafraq and its surrounding areas.

Project Update: Mechanical Works on Al Safawi Solar PV Project

Works ongoing at Al Safawi 66 MWp Solar PV Project, approaching Mechanical Completion

Al Safawi, Jordan – November 2018: Construction works on the Al Safawi 66 MWp Solar PV Plant developed by MASE affiliate ATC are approaching Mechanical Completion with significant progress in the installation of tracking structure, PV modules and electrical infrastructure.  Works on the Project, which is located within the Al Safawi village in Mafraq, Jordan, commenced early this year with commercial operation scheduled by Q1 2019.

The Project comprises 66.69 MWp of solar PV capacity.  Major equipment include cutting-edge frameless PV modules and high-reliability inverters, most of which have arrived on site and are currently being installed and commissioned.

The Project continues to have a significant footprint on the surrounding region, employing over 70 residents of the neighboring Al Safawi region.  The Project has also implemented several community-based initiatives.

 

About the Al Safawi Solar PV Project

The Al Safawi Arabia Two Solar PV Plant, with a capacity of 51 MW (66.69 MWp), is part of Jordan’s second round Renewable Energy IPP Program.  The project, which was awarded as a result of a record-breaking competitive bidding process, is being co-developed in partnership with a leading international solar development firm. Construction on the project commenced in Q1 2018, with the plant scheduled to be operational by 2019. ATC, MASE’s affiliate development entity which will hold the equity stake in the Al Safawi project, is the only developer to be successfully involved in both rounds of Jordan’s Renewable Energy IPP Program, having previously developed the currently operational Arabia One Solar PV Plant as part of the first round. MASE will provide comprehensive operations & maintenance to the project under a banked O&M contract.

Amman, Jordan – October 2018: MASE has been awarded a contract to engineer, procure, construct, operate and maintain rooftop solar PV plants on four public schools located across Jordan. The project is funded by the Jordan Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) in collaboration with Mercy Corps and is part of the second phase of the joint Schools Heating Initiative. The contract has been awarded as a result of a public bidding process in which MASE achieved the highest cumulative marks during evaluation. The project will be implemented with consultation from the National Energy Research Center / Royal Scientific Society (NERC/RSSand logistical coordination with the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The Project comprises the design, engineering, procurement, construction, operations and maintenance of rooftop solar PV systems with a cumulative capacity of over 80 kWp.  Upon commissioning, MASE will operate, maintain and manage the assets and will guarantee their performance.

Works on the Project have commenced and are expected to be completed in under two months.

Amman, Jordan – August 2018: A joint venture consisting of MASE and Khalifeh International Contracting (KIC), an Arabia Group company and associate firm, has been awarded a contract to engineer, procure, construct, operate and maintain rooftop solar PV plants, air conditioning units and energy-efficient LED lighting on 34 public schools located across Jordan. The contract also comprises general maintenance and rehabilitation works on the schools. The contract has been awarded as a result of a public bidding process in which the MASE+KIC JV achieved the highest cumulative marks during evaluation. The project will be implemented for the Princess Alia Foundation (PAF) with consultation from the National Energy Research Center / Royal Scientific Society (NERC/RSSand logistical coordination with the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The Project comprises the design, engineering, procurement, construction, operations and maintenance of rooftop solar PV systems with a cumulative capacity of up to 0.8 MWp.  Upon commissioning, MASE will operate, maintain and manage the assets and will guarantee their performance.  In addition to the solar PV systems, the MASE+KIC JV will design, procure and install air conditioning units and replace the existing lighting with energy-efficient LED lamps on all 34 schools.  The JV will also perform general maintenance and rehabilitation works on the schools – this will include replacing damaged fixtures, windows and insulation.

Works on the Project have commenced and are expected to be completed in under six months.

Four MASE team members complete a comprehensive 2-week PMP preparatory course

Amman, Jordan – August 2018: Four principal members of the MASE team have completed an intensive two week Project Management Professional (PMP) preparatory course.  The four team members intend to obtain PMP certification during the course of the next few months.  The course, which comprised over 45 hours of intensive knowledge building, material review and scenario analysis concluded with a formal graduation ceremony held at MASE’s offices in Amman.
